War is terrible. However, in the unfortunate scenario you become a frontline solider fighting a war or become a captured POW, remembering these parameters might save your life and if you respect it, you might also save lives.

1. Requirement of necessity

Combatants are required to attack only those targets that are necessary to achieve a military objective.

2. Requirement of distinction

Requiring combatants to distinguish themselves between military and civilian targets when they strike.

3. Requirement of proportionality

Requiring to respond to enemy attacks that the effects of the means and methods of warefare used must not be disproportionate to the military advantage sought.

4. Humane treatment

Torture is prohibited on any captured prisoner of war(POW) and POW’s are entitled to basic medical benefits, shelter and nutrional needs must be catered to the POW.
